IoT Systems Engineer – Role Summary

The IoT Systems Engineer is the technical architect behind every connected SOLAPS solar product. Reporting to the Nigeria Marketing Manager and working in close partnership with the Mobile App PM and Chinese hardware manufacturers, this role owns the full IoT stack — embedded firmware, cloud backend, device communication protocols, OTA update infrastructure, and telemetry data pipelines. SOLAPS is building a fleet of connected solar devices deployed across Nigeria, and this engineer ensures those devices are reliable, secure, and generating the data that powers SOLAPS’s analytics and customer experience.

Key Responsibilities:

  • IoT Architecture: Design and maintain the SOLAPS IoT system architecture — from microcontroller firmware to cloud backend — for all connected solar products.
  • Hardware Collaboration: Work directly with Chinese hardware manufacturers on firmware specifications, component selection, communication protocol decisions, and factory acceptance testing.
  • Firmware Review: Review and critique all firmware specifications provided by the China factory; define SOLAPS’s technical requirements and push back on inadequate implementations.
  • OTA Infrastructure: Build and maintain a secure, reliable OTA (over-the-air) firmware update system for the SOLAPS device fleet deployed across Nigeria.
  • Telemetry Pipeline: Design and implement the device telemetry data schema and ingestion pipeline in collaboration with the Data Analytics Lead.
  • Field Failure Analysis: Investigate device failures in the field; perform root cause analysis; coordinate firmware fixes and field remediation with the China team.
  • Security: Ensure all SOLAPS IoT devices transmit data securely — enforcing encryption, authentication, and secure boot practices from the hardware design stage.

KPIs:

  1. Device Reliability:
    • Maintain fleet-wide device uptime (app connectivity) above 92%.
    • Reduce field failure rate to below 2% of deployed device fleet per quarter.
  2. OTA Updates:
    • Deploy firmware updates to 95%+ of the active device fleet within 7 days of release.
    • Zero OTA update failures that result in device bricking.
  3. Telemetry Data Quality:
    • Device telemetry data completeness above 98% — minimal missed reporting intervals.
    • All new product telemetry schemas documented and delivered to the Data Analytics Lead before device launch.
  4. China Collaboration:
    • Weekly engineering review with the China factory team — 100% attendance.
    • All SOLAPS firmware requirements formally documented and signed off by the factory before production commences.
  5. Security:
    • 100% of new SOLAPS IoT products use TLS encryption for all data in transit.
    • Zero production devices shipped without secure boot and authenticated OTA.

Expected Results/Outcomes:

  • Reliable Connected Products: A SOLAPS device fleet with industry-leading uptime and a field failure rate that competitors cannot match.
  • Fast Iteration: OTA infrastructure that allows SOLAPS to fix bugs, add features, and respond to field issues without physically retrieving devices.
  • Data Foundation: A clean, structured telemetry pipeline that gives the Data Analytics Lead and Product Manager the data they need to make smart decisions.
  • Strong China Partnership: A deeply technical, collaborative relationship with the China hardware team — ensuring SOLAPS’s engineering requirements are met consistently in production.
  • Secure by Default: Every SOLAPS connected product built with security as a first principle, protecting customer data and device integrity from day one.

Compensation:

  • Base Salary: $32,000 – $52,000 per year (based on experience and depth of IoT expertise).
  • Performance Bonus: Up to 15% of base salary, tied to device uptime, OTA success rate, and product launch delivery.
  • Equity: 0.1% – 0.25% company shares, subject to vesting schedule.
  • Other Benefits: Health insurance, data/airtime allowance, hardware and lab tools budget, remote/hybrid flexibility, and professional development opportunities.
